HTML to Text

Convert HTML to plain text. Strips tags while preserving readable spacing, line breaks, list formatting, and entity decoding — all in your browser, no upload, instant results.

About the HTML to Text Converter

This HTML to text converter runs entirely in your browser. Paste HTML into the box above, choose how lists and links should be rendered, and click Convert. The result is plain text with sensible spacing. Nothing is uploaded — parsing happens instantly with JavaScript using the native DOMParser.

How it works

  • Block elements — <p>, <div>, headings, and lists are separated by blank lines.
  • Inline elements — <strong>, <em>, <span> are unwrapped; their text content is preserved.
  • Line breaks — <br> becomes a single newline; <hr> becomes a separator.
  • Lists — <li> items are prefixed with your chosen marker (dash, asterisk, number, or plain).
  • Links — When enabled, <a href="url">text</a> becomes text (url).
  • Tables — Cells are joined by tabs; rows are separated by newlines.
  • Entities — HTML entities like &amp;, &lt;, &nbsp; are decoded.
  • Scripts & styles — <script> and <style> contents are removed entirely.

Common use cases

  • Extracting article text from HTML emails.
  • Preparing content for plain-text indexes or search.
  • Generating previews from rich-text editor output.
  • Cleaning up scraped HTML for downstream processing.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool upload my HTML? No. All parsing happens locally in your browser. Your content never leaves your device.

What happens to images? <img> tags are dropped. When an alt attribute is present, that text is kept in place.

Are forms and inputs included? No. Form controls are removed during conversion since they have no meaningful plain-text representation.

Is there a size limit? The only limit is your browser's available memory. Even large documents convert quickly.
